Santorini is one of the most visited islands in the Mediterranean, and understanding how it actually works as a ferry destination is important before you arrive. The island's ferry port is at Athinios, a functional concrete harbour cut into the base of the caldera cliff on the western side of the island. This is not a place you drift into and immediately feel the romance of Greece: it is busy, slightly chaotic in peak season, and the road up to the main towns of Fira and Oia involves a steep climb by car, bus, or cable car from the old port.
That said, arriving by ferry into the caldera gives you one of the great approaches in Greek travel. From Piraeus, the journey to Santorini takes around 5 hours by high-speed catamaran (SeaJets and Hellenic Seaways) or 7 to 8 hours by conventional Blue Star ferry. Both options are reliable, though the fast ferries can be cancelled in rough weather, which is worth bearing in mind if you are on a tight schedule.
Santorini is well connected within the Cyclades. From Athinios you can pick up ferries to Ios (around 30 to 40 minutes), Naxos, Paros, and Mykonos, as well as seasonal connections to Crete (Heraklion and Rethymno) and further islands like Amorgos, Anafi, and Folegandros. Anafi in particular, a tiny and very quiet island to the east, is only realistically reached from Santorini and is worth considering if you want to escape the crowds.
Peak season on Santorini is extreme by Greek standards: July and August see the island packed with visitors and ferry tickets, particularly to Mykonos, should be booked as far in advance as possible. The shoulder months of May, June, September, and October offer far better conditions for exploring, more reasonable prices, and the same stunning views with fewer bodies blocking them.
