Greek Ferry Port Guides
Understanding the ports you will pass through is one of the most practical things you can do before travelling around Greece by ferry.
Understanding the ports you will pass through is one of the most practical things you can do before travelling around Greece by ferry. Greek ferry ports vary enormously: Piraeus is a vast, multi-terminal commercial port handling hundreds of departures a day, while a small island harbour like Agnontas on Skopelos is little more than a concrete jetty with a handful of passengers. Knowing what to expect at each port saves time, reduces stress, and means you are standing in the right place when the ferry arrives.
The major mainland ports include Piraeus, which handles most Cyclades, Dodecanese, and Crete routes, and is well served by metro from Athens city centre. Rafina, east of Athens near the airport, is smaller and less overwhelming, making it a better choice for travellers connecting from flights to islands like Mykonos or Andros. Volos, in Thessaly, is the main jumping-off point for the Sporades islands of Skiathos, Skopelos, and Alonissos.
Igoumenitsa, on the northwestern mainland, is the ferry hub for Corfu and the Ionian islands, as well as for international routes to Italy. On the islands themselves, port layouts and facilities vary widely. Some island ports have ticket offices, cafes, luggage storage, and bus connections directly from the quay.
Others are simply a pier and a car park, with nothing more than a small kiosk if you are lucky. Arriving early at any Greek ferry port is always a good idea, but this is especially true at smaller ports where boarding procedures can be informal and where the ferry crew may start loading vehicles and passengers quickly once the vessel ties up. For island ports with multiple terminals or separate docking areas for different ferry companies, the guides here will tell you exactly where to go.
Ferry ports in Greece do not always have a single obvious waiting area, and knowing in advance which company you are travelling with and where their vessels berth makes the whole experience considerably smoother.
